Valenisia Pole Tu'uhoko

d. February 28, 2019

1929 ~ 2019

Valenisia Pole Tu'uhoko Lui, age 89, passed away peacefully and gracefully on February 25, 2019 in Salt Lake City, Utah surrounded by many who loved and adored her dearly. Sia was born on August 25, 1929 in Hihifo Ha'apai Tonga to Siosiana Finau Lutui and Pole Tu'uhoko. Sia was the fourth oldest of seven children. Her siblings are Mele Tupou Inukihaangana, Tevita Tameifuna, Kalafitoni Pole, Sione Fiusati Pole, Halauafu Pole, and Sela Pole.

Growing up in Ha'apai, Sia enjoyed cooking, baking, cleaning, sewing, and later on in life enjoyed raising her children and grandchildren. Sia met the love of her life Tomasi Lihai Lui of Fua'amotu, Tonga in 1947 while she was a shop keeper at Molisi's Shop in the village of Fua'amotu. Lihai would visit the shop often just to see Sia. He remembers how beautiful she was working behind the counter of the store. Lihai was an excellent athlete so Sia would visit his rugby games and watch him closely while he showed off his athletic skills. He vowed that one day she would be his wife. A year later on July 28, 1948, Sia and Lihai were happily married in Nuku'alofa, Tonga.

The happy couple started out their lives in Fua'amotu where Sia became involved in community programs specifically with water conservation. She was the President of the Health Committee in the village and was very involved in the community affairs. Although Sia was raised Catholic, Lihai's religious beliefs as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints influenced Sia tremendously that she was baptized to the LDS faith in March 1949. Then, together they were sealed for time and all eternity in the Hamilton New Zealand temple in December 1968. Sia and Lihai have eight children: Heneli Fusitouone Pole (Mele), Tupou Motulalo Wolfgramm (Legrand), Mele Elizabeth Battisti (Dave), Senine Filipe (Filisi), Ma'ake Lui (Ofa), Siosiana Finau Kioa (Nafitalai Unga), Mokomoko 'i Navu Fanaika (Sefita), Manu Lutui Lui (Litia). Sia's adopted brothers include Tonga Lutui, Tevita Lutui, Lisiate Lutui, and Semisi Lutui. Sia loved her uncles (fa'e tangata) very much and always regarded them close to her heart: Maile Lutui, Lutui Pahulu and Manu Lutui.

Sia is survived by her husband of 70 years Tomasi Lihai Lui, her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We love you, Grandma Sia, and miss you very much. Thank you for raising us in the gospel, for inspiring us to always do our best, and for your unwavering faith in us. You are in the Lord's hands now until we see you again at the Savior's feet.
