Monte Jack Morgan

September 2, 1934 — June 12, 2024

Well, Monte Jack Morgan arose at dawn,

dressed and pulled his lace boots on,

and reached up for his rifle on the chest.

For he was tired as he could be,

of city life and illness drudgery,

and craved to see his lovely bride and eldest son.

So, on June 12, he bid adieu,

leaving priceless memories for me and you,

of the husband, father, brother, grandpa, he has been.

He built a cabin with bare hands,

raised crops and cattle on Idaho land,

and proudly served his country in the 101st Airborne.

He jumped from planes, scaled radio towers,

helped wife and kids for endless hours,

and did it all with a smile that melted your heart!

He could work for hours on end,

Seemingly with the strength of ten men,

Then pick up his guitar and strum a rousing tune.

Music filled his soul,

inspired by the likes of Chet Atkins and Hank Snow,

and everyone knew his music was his art.

So passionately playing his guitar,

he brought joy to crowds near and far —

the DJ, the singer, the writer, and consummate entertainer.

Six surviving children try to emulate,

along with 12 grands and 20 greats—

each in the shadow of this brilliant man.

He’s survived by two amazing brothers,

each a pillar of strength like the others,

and by family and friends too many to count.

We’re all better people from knowing Jack,

his example inspires us to follow his tracks,

as he met every adventure and challenge with true grit.

Each time Jack sang Henry Jones, I could tell,

that Jack’s own spirit shines in the tale,

a bit of Henry Jones tingling well within his core!

I can see him now, rushing to his bride,

with an angry grizzly nipping his stride!

Running so fast, his ankles set his socks afire!

He reassures Deanne calmly, with a voice full of grace,

as he slams the cabin door in the charging bruin’s face:

“Well, my dear you’re quite aware, that most folks go and shoot their bear; but me?! Well, I brought this baby to heaven alive!“

Jack was born in American Falls, Idaho, to Leon and Mamie Morgan, but his love was beautiful and rugged Salmon, Idaho, where he spent most of his early years on the family farm. He and Deanne Adell Morgan started their journey together in the LDS Idaho Falls Temple, and they enjoyed nearly 61 years before she passed in 2019. He never left her side, and he returned to her peacefully from his home in Sandy, Utah, as any cowboy would want—on his own terms. Jack knew he’d be joining his son, Bret LaFawn Morgan, and many others waiting for him with open arms.

Join us for a short graveside service to honor this amazing man at Mountain View Memorial Cemetery, 3115 Bengal Blvd., Cottonwood Heights, UT 84121, on June 28, 11:00 am sharp. Don’t be late, “we’re burnin’ daylight!”

Jack and Deanne loved to walk arm in arm around Silver Lake up Big Cottonwood Canyon. They spent hours there, talking, laughing, and enjoying the beautiful scenery. If you’ve been to Silver Lake, you’ll know what I mean; if you haven’t, well here’s your chance! It’s just up the road from Spruces Campground! Our first thought was to install a bench in Jack and Deanne’s honor along the boardwalk there, as it’s currently being renovated, but the Forest Service kindly shot that idea down! We still love the bench idea, because Jack and Deanne loved nature so much, but as we go to print on this humble missive, the location is as yet TBD. If you like the idea as well, then in lieu of flowers, feel free to contribute to the Morgan Bench. It will be a great tribute for all to enjoy!

If interested, we’ve set up a Zelle account under “Morgan Bench” 385-271-7530.
