James Joseph Doherty

d. May 13, 2022

St. George-

James (Jim) Joseph Doherty age 83, passed away at his home on May 7th, 2022, surrounded by family and friends. He was born on May 16th, 1938, in New York (Manhattan) New York to Henry Doherty and Mary Hopkins. He was married to Michele Sylvestro on July 9th, 1983.

A graduate of Philosophy from Hunter College. He was a man who loved words and was always seeking knowledge. An avid reader who devoured a book almost every day. His other passions included music, the New York Times crossword puzzle, chocolate, and orange soda.

James enjoyed games, especially bridge, shooting pool and playing dominos with friends. No matter where he lived, he was always a New Yorker at heart. Rooting for his beloved New York Yankees and New York Giants.

He was a man with old world courtesy, charm, wit, and a killer smile that won over many hearts. He had a wicked dry sense of humor and didn't suffer fools gladly.

James served his country during the cold war as an interpreter for the U.S. Army intelligence in Germany. As a management consultant, he worked with companies throughout the world to increase their productivity and bottom line.

A man with deep faith, he found peace in the Lord through the writing of St. Augustine. He was devoted to the Blessed Sacrament.

James is survived by his loyal and loving wife Michele. His sons James (Mary Jo), Sean (Chris) and Shannon (Tamara) and his six beloved grandchildren, Julia (Brett), Mary (Mike), Fiona (Austin), Tegan, Eamon, and Tobin. Every who know him, loved him, and will miss him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his parents and the mother of his children Alice Doherty.

Funeral services will be held on May 24th at St. Peter Catholic Church in Geneva Illinois. Interment will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked donations be sent to Wounded Warrior Project.
