1929 ~ 2019

Dean Samuel Alger passed away on Friday, September 27, 2019, at the age of 90 at his home in St George Utah.  Dean was born April 5, 1929, in Bell, CA and lived most of his childhood years in Emmett, ID.  He returned to Bell, graduating from Bell High School. He attended Brigham Young University on several athletic scholarships, graduating with a degree in Education.  He served as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints in the Northern States mission. He comes from a line of amazing missionaries such as Jacob Hamblin.  Maybe that is why he loved sharing his beliefs which brought many to the knowledge of the Gospel.  He also served in the Korean War for two years.

Dean and his first wife, Meredith, were blessed with five children: Todd (who passed away at the age of 12), Brad, Jill, Ross and Julie. Dean had great love for his children, especially for the fact that they gave him twelve grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.  Dean's blessings continued when he married his wife, Judy, and added her five children to his life: Bob, Brent, Blake, Brooke Ann and Chenoa. The love for more family continued to grow with the addition of 12 more grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Dean's love for his family and friends was endless.  He never met a stranger and never passed a baby, a child, or adult without a hug, friendly comment or expressed concern.  The only person Dean loved more was his Savior, Jesus Christ.   He knew that it was the Savior who carried him when he was down and was the one who lifted him to greater heights.

A very close bond existed between Dean and the "River Rat's"; a group of men who shared a 40 year tradition of the "All Guys Annual River Trip."  It was a time of fun, bonding friendships and great food.

Dean, along with his partner, was successful in the flower business and at that time supplied 80% of the world market for geraniums. But Dean's dream was to own an athletic club.   The Atlantis gym in Whittier, CA, was born out of that dream.  The Atlantis provided world class handball courts where many US Championship Tournaments were held.  Dean, and his sons, Brad and Ross, all took Champion handball titles in their age category.  Dean also hired many high school kids to work at his club.  After 14 years, Dean sold his business and he and Judy retired to St George, Utah.

Dean considered his greatest accomplishment and gifts to be his love for his family and the Savior.  He shared his caring, loving and fun sense of humor with everyone.  So many will miss him but there will be many happy to see him as he continues on his journey....mainly his son "Todders".  Thank you  Dean for sharing yourself, your love, your sense of humor and for giving, helping and caring for others.  We know you will be there to greet us when it is our time to leave mortality.  You may be gone but NEVER will be forgotten.

A Memorial Service will be held for Dean Alger on Sat., October 19, 2019, 11:00 AM at the LDS Slick Rock Ward, 2434 E Riverside Drive, St George, Utah 84790.

As a tribute to Dean's love for children, the family suggests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to a children's charity.
